Real teaching, real students, real feedback

Once you've completed the Trinity CertTESOL, you have the skills and the qualification — the work experience gives you the chance to use them. You'll teach small groups of real English learners at Iberia Language Academy, with a senior tutor on hand throughout.

What it involves

You teach a small group of English learners — a maximum of 10 students — twice a week, typically from 14:00 to 15:30. Sessions are at Iberia Language Academy, the same building where you completed your TEFL course.

The commitment

3 hours per week over 8 weeks. It's a manageable addition to your Spanish classes schedule, and leaves you plenty of time for the rest of your Barcelona experience.

You'll be teaching at Iberia Language Academy

ILA is our sister school — a highly rated Spanish language school based in the same building on Carrer d'Aragó in the heart of Barcelona's Eixample. It's where you'll have done your TEFL teaching practice, so you'll already know the space, the system and many of the staff before your first session.

What you'll take away

The CertTESOL qualification gets you through the door. The work experience gives you something most candidates don't have — actual hours in front of a real class.

Real classroom hours on your CV

Most entry-level teaching candidates have a qualification but zero hours. You'll leave with documented teaching experience — a significant advantage when applying for jobs.

Confidence in the classroom

Theory is one thing — standing in front of real students is another. The work experience bridges that gap and builds the confidence that makes a good teacher great.

Professional feedback & mentoring

A senior tutor observes and gives structured feedback on your teaching. The kind of mentoring you'd normally only get in a formal teacher training context.

A reference from a real school

ILA can provide a reference letter confirming your teaching hours and performance. Invaluable when applying for teaching roles internationally.

Intercultural communication skills

Your students are real Barcelona residents from diverse backgrounds. Teaching them develops communication skills that go far beyond the classroom.

A smooth transition to working

Many Double Semester graduates go on to find teaching jobs in Barcelona or elsewhere. The work experience is a natural first step into that career.

The transition from student to teacher

You don't go from TEFL student to classroom teacher overnight — the transition is gradual and fully supported.

Complete the Trinity CertTESOL (Weeks 2–5)

During the TEFL course you do supervised teaching practice with real learners. By the end of week five you're fully qualified and you already know the school, the students and how classes run. The transition to work experience feels natural, not abrupt.

Preparation & induction (Week 6)

Before your first solo session, our senior tutors brief you on your student group — their levels, backgrounds and learning goals. You'll prepare your first lesson with guidance and have a chance to ask questions before stepping in.

Teaching sessions (Weeks 6–14)

Twice a week, 14:00–15:30, you teach your group. Sessions are at ILA in the same space where you trained. A senior tutor is always present or available, and you receive structured feedback after each session to help you improve.

Reference & completion (Week 14+)

On completing your 24 hours of teaching, you receive a letter confirming your work experience from ILA. This, alongside your CertTESOL certificate and SIELE qualification, makes for a genuinely strong CV for international teaching applications.

Work experience questions

No — this is an unpaid teaching internship. The value is in the experience, the mentoring and the reference, not a salary. Think of it as the most practical addition to your CV you could make in 8 weeks.
You'll be leading the class, but a senior tutor is always available — either present in the room or nearby. You'll never be left to sink or swim. After each session you get structured feedback, and you can always ask for guidance before classes.
Real English learners enrolled at Iberia Language Academy — adults from Barcelona and around the world who are learning English for work, travel or personal development. Groups are a maximum of 10 students.
The work experience is included in the Double Semester program and is available as an optional addition for Semester students. If you're on the Semester program and interested, contact us at [email protected] to discuss availability.
That's exactly what the support structure is there for. Teaching is a skill that develops with practice — it's normal to find it challenging at first. Our tutors have seen it all before and will work with you to build your confidence. Most students find that within two or three sessions they're enjoying it.
